The Ainu , also called Aynu, Aino , and in historical texts Ezo, are indigenous peoples of Japan now inhabiting parts of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. Historically, they spoke the Ainu language and related varieties. Official estimates of the population are of around 25,000; however, the unofficial number is much closer to 200,000 people.
