Zapatistas Marcos Press Conference Sunday, April 22, 2007 By Brenda Norrell

MAGDALENA de KINO, Sonora, Mexico — Subcomandante Marcos and Mayan Comandantes plan a press conference here on Sunday, April 22, 2007, to announce details of the Indigenous International Conference, to be held in northwest Mexico in the fall of 2007.

Indigenous representatives from tribes in Sonora, Mexico and tribal members from Arizona Indian tribes have been invited to join Marcos at the Indigenous Intercontinental Conference announcement.

Marcos will be at the Rancho Penasco, where he held a listening session with O’odham during the Other Campaign in October. Marcos and 10 Comandantes from Chiapas arrived at Rancho Penasco, and stayed overnight April 8, on their way to the Cucapa Peace Camp in Baja, Mexico, to uphold Cucapa fishing rights.

Marcos said he hopes the Intercontinental gathering will “touch the hearts and recuperate the souls” of Indigenous people struggling throughout the continents. “When Indigenous Peoples come together from all regions, they will realize that money means nothing when compared to the values of Indigenous Peoples,” Marcos said in an interview here, speaking in Spanish and English.

The press conference will be held at the Rancho Penasco, biodiversity ranch, 11 kilometers south of Magdalena, on the main highway to Hermosillo. Magdalena is less than a two-hour drive south of Nogales, Ariz. (source)
