Tuareg Truce

By Jay Taber

As Nationalia reports, the Tuareg are apparently willing to consider autonomy over their indigenous territory of Azawad in northern Mali, as opposed to complete independence from the Malian state. Now that Islamist guerrillas have retreated from the area, the Malian army and UN peacekeepers plan to redeploy to the territory under a tentative truce with the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA). Under the agreement between Mali and the Tuareg, the MNLA will postpone disarmament until they see what sort of self-government for Azawad can be negotiated.
