In Art and the ones missing, Matthew Ryan Smith reports on using art as a means for knowledge, healing and accountability. Examining government responses to crises in China and Canada, Smith observes that when faced with official evasion of accountability, art can represent a public inquiry of a different order–one that communicates when others do not. As he says, community participation with artists seeking accountability and memorialization helps them to “gain strength, find resolve, and hold some stillness amid the chaos.”
