Oil on Ice

By Jay Taber

Writing at Guernica magazine, Subhankar Banerjee explores the topic of drilling oil in the Arctic Ocean, a staggeringly rich ecosystem critical to iconic species like the blue whale. As Banerjee notes, fast-tracking drilling plans in the Arctic, as in the Gulf of Mexico, is sure to result in colossal spills–in this case, oil on ice.

While the Inupiat communities brace themselves for this apocalyptic invasion by oil companies with US Government support, the walrus, whales and polar bears face a future of extinction–all due to the fossil fuel culture where industrial man’s destiny is unfortunately akin to walking on water.
