IC Magazine: Cutting Edge News and Analysis to Educate and Inspire

By John Ahni Schertow

IC Magazine needs your help! Unless we can raise $40,000 by January 1, we’re going to suffer some critical losses that will bring an end to more than ten years of work. Please Donate today! We’re counting on you!

They may not be issuing any press releases, but you can be sure that indigenous rights abusers, anti-environmentalists and industry sycophants alike would love to get rid of IC Magazine.

We only need to look at a few quick highlights to understand why:

  • In 2009, when the Awajun and Wampis started protesting a serious of controversial laws that threatened to undermine or extinguish Indigenous Rights in Peru, IC Magazine was front and center. It took more than five weeks and a horrible tragedy before the rest of the world’s media would speak up.
  • In 2010, When the Palawan stood up to defend their lands from the threat of mining and oil palm development, we were the first and only organization outside of the Philippines to stand with them. To date, no other publication in North America has covered the Palawan’s struggle.
  • In 2011, when the Kanai started calling out for a moratorium on fracking, IC Magazine dropped everything to give them some desperately-needed media support. This time, it took six months before any other media in Canada would cover the same story.
  • In 2012, thanks to a well-timed essay by Russell Diabo, we were able to blow the lid off Stephen Harper’s Termination plan, helping to build a foundation for #IdleNoMore.
  • In 2013, we were the first publication in the world to expose CERA’s national offensive to terminate American Indian treaty rights in the United States.

We may not be good at marketing ourselves, but we do our very best to make sure you know exactly what’s going on when Indigenous rights are being threatened and when Indigenous Peoples step forward to defend and preserve their lands and ways of life. IC Magazine picks up where so many others disappear!

As Jay Taber noted earlier this year, we’re also “Setting the terms for thought leaders in academia and media, that consumers of mass communication turn to to interpret what is happening in the conflicts between tribes, institutions, markets and networks. IC’s framework is the cutting edge analysis that progressive leaders use to inform, educate and inspire.”

With your support, IC Magazine can continue to stand on the front lines, with an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse of the Indigenous Peoples Movement.

Don’t do indigenous rights abusers the favour! Stand with IC Magazine!
