IC Magazine: 11 Years and Growing Strong

By IC Magazine

Winnipeg, MB (June 11, 2015) – In June 2004, after more than a year of research and preparation, Intercontinental Cry officially opened its doors in an effort to provide the international community with a much-needed look at the contemporary struggles of the world’s 6000 Indigenous Peoples and Nations.

From its humble beginnings as a community news aggregator to its current status as a publication of the Center for World Indigenous Studies, IC has always stood tall, offering a continuous stream of essential news and information that has helped to inform countless individuals, organizations, movements and networks around the world, It has also offered several noteworthy magazines and two independent films including Ñagare Barro Blanco, which recently became an official selection at the Green Unplugged online film festival.

“I feel very privileged to be a part of this work,” comments John Schertow, IC Magazine’s Editor in Chief. Not only does IC offer tonnes of great coverage, it’s helping to build a more inclusive–and, dare I say, responsible–narrative that accurately relays the needs, rights, interests and opinions of the world’s Indigenous Peoples.”

“Behind the scenes, we also developed a unique, priority-based media strategy that has served us well over the years. It was born out of pure necessity. With limited access to funds, we needed something that would enable us to do more with less. Now that we’re under the wing of a mature organization like CWIS, it will prove to be instrumental to our mission of covering the entirety of the Indigenous Peoples movement. Sufficed to say, it’s time for us to get serious as a publication,” Schertow adds.

With continuous support from CWIS Chair Rudy Ryser, Schertow has been working for the past six months to turn IC into a sustainable publication that will, as a starting point, triple its news coverage, offer more in-depth investigative journalism and establish a unique set of ethical standards and practices from which to operate.

“You might not be able to tell by looking at our website, but it’s happening. All our hard work is finally starting to bear fruit. In fact, we’re just a few days away from officially announcing our editorial board. As soon as that happens I suspect things will begin to move very swiftly.”
