Heartless

By Jay Taber

Writing at Occupy 2012, Nicholas Mirzoeff discusses the dramatic expansion of the Commodities Futures Index since the collapse of debt-based securities in 2008. As this expansion fuels the present speculation in land and food — displacing peasant and indigenous farmers for agro-industrial plantations — the seizure of lands by states and corporations, with help from the World Bank, is creating a new wave of once self-sufficient refugees. While beneficial to biofuel speculators and climate change mitigation traders under the REDD scam, the recolonization of indigenous nations in the name of green development amounts to one of the most heartless Ponzi schemes hatched in the history of humankind.
