Collective Priorities

By Jay Taber

White Earth Nation in Minnesota has experience in leading indigenous change, which is not surprising given that it is home to such noted activist scholars as Gerald Vizenor and Winona LaDuke, who founded White Earth Land Recovery Project, and the campaign at Honor the Earth to promote sustainable tribal economies. Now, as we learn at Turtle Talk, White Earth Nation is leading the constitutional reform movement that will enable tribal nations in the US and Canada to rewrite the constitutions imposed on them in order to make indigenous governance a thing of their own creation–tribal constitutions that, “include their own cultural touchstones and collective priorities in the document that governs them”.
