Assembly of Chiefs call for expedited resolution of Lubicon land rights

By John Ahni Schertow

Last month the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs of Alberta voted unanimously to support a resolution calling on the governments of Canada and Alberta to “expedite resolution to the outstanding claims of the Lubicon First Nation.”

The Chiefs noted that “there is a need to deliver a strong and unified message to the Crown from this Assembly in support of the Lubicon First Nation and its citizens.”

The Assembly includes Chiefs from Treaties 6, 7 and 8.

Resolutions of this sort from organizations in all walks of life — unions, political parties, non-governmental organizations, faith groups, constituency, neighbourhood, ratepayer, business and professional associations — are a welcome boost to the Lubicon people’s efforts to achieve a just resolution of their land rights.

The full resolution is attached.
