Abatwa

Introduction

The Batwa (also known as the Abatwa or Abathwa) are the oldest known inhabitants of the Great Lakes region of central Africa. They are often referred to as “pygmies” due to their small stature. That term, however, is considered to be quite pejorative.

Currently: The Abatwa are losing about one percent of their population each year, and miscarriages are frequent because the Abatwa’s health is so low and they have little or no access to aid, medicine, or social supports.
