India is renowned for its religious tolerance and understanding. If mining of Niyamgiri mountain is allowed to go ahead against the strongest possible religious protests by the Dongria Kondh people that precious image will have been shattered. Even in the venal USA native people's rights in matters of sacred land are now respected. Is India in the 21st century going to model itself on Great Britain and the USA in the 19th century with an ethos centred on the appropriation of yet greater wealth by the already incredibly wealthy? Or is this merely uncharacteristic contempt for minor religious beliefs - an attitude that shames a country that is internationally held in great respect.
