An internal investigative panel has just prepared ‘a stinging indictment’ of the World Bank’s conduct in connection to the large-scale industrial logging campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo; revealing that the Bank encouraged foreign companies to destructively log the rainforests; misled Congo’s government about the value of the forests; repeatedly broke their own rules and regulations to ensure the plan went ahead; and most damningly, threatened the lives of millions of Indigenous People and subsistence farmers who depend on the forests for survival.

Wilmar, the world’s biggest trader in palm oil, is illegally logging rainforests, deliberately setting forests on fire, and intentionally destroying lands that are home to numerous communities in Indonesia without even consulting them.

Friends of the Earth (FOE) and two other NGO’s recently released a report (pdf) discussing these activities.

Point for point, Wilmar emphatically denies all of this — but Laili Kharnur of Lembaga Gemawan, who traveled to attend the release of the report, said in an interview she had witnessed first hand the misery caused by Wilmar’s activities:

Despite the 2004 International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision that called for tearing down the Wall and compensating affected communities, construction of the Wall has accelerated.
