The short-lived trend of corporate social responsibility came to a grinding halt in April, reminding us yet again that they have no intention of changing voluntarily, atleast, not as long as their wants take precedence over rights and the needs of others.
And of course it was business as usual for Nation States - especially Canada, America and Bangladesh, who jumped at the chance to attack Indigenous people and illegally invade and usurp their lands.
Now for the depressing truth: In the coming months, there will be more invasions and offensives, more arrests and abuses, more …

In February we saw ‘civil society’ start to demand corporations abandon oppressive and destructive practices. Well, that trend continued through March; unfortunately, it seems to have been more chest pounding than anything… It was as if everyone sat around a campfire, talking about far off things while a fire raged a foot to their backside. Integrity what? Responsibility who? “No, no no. We’re not doing anything wrong. We’re not the problem. We’re not the enemy.”
And so, desperately clinging to myth and hypocrisy, the so-called business community pushed on, doing everything to …

It was pretty much ‘business as usual’ for the month of February. Corporations continued acting as innocent third parties while Governments continued to demand indigenous People allow the theft of their lands and destruction of their cultures without question. “It’s in your best interests,” we’re told. “It’s for the greater good.”
Amidst this however, there was one important shift in the world this month–one that we can only hope will catch on in greater force. Governments began pulling back the reins of development, and a few corporations and Shareholders started withdrawing from and speaking …

Things are getting worse for the world’s indigenous people. It’s no longer a matter of a few companies doing whatever they want to gut a region at the direct expense of a culture, or about some government that’s more than willing to crush down a people so the company can do it without interruption. The problem is that it’s being done more and more and more. It’s developmental genocide on a global scale and it won’t be letting up anytime soon.
And so I echo the Zapatista call for us …

Pictured here is Residential School Activist Nora Bernard, the 72-year old Mi’kmaq woman that started the first class-action lawsuit for Residential Schools survivors in 1996. Nora was recently found dead in her home.
In keeping with the patterns relayed in previous months, December was a time filled with both wanted and unwelcomed events.
On the positive side, government officials in India acknowledged the Narmada dam was illegal; and in Canada, the Ontario Government announced they will be …

Under the cloak of justice and benevolence, ethnic violence heavily increased around the world last month, providing the backdrop for several emerging conflicts and the advancement of dozens more facing Indigenous and landless People.
Propaganda continues to be utilized by both states and corporations, and indigenous leaders continue to be assassinated while innocent people are punished for standing up and defending themselves.
On the bright side, Indigenous People around the world continued working to protect the land and defend their ways of life. De facto sovereignty is becoming …

October has in many respects been a month of empowerment for indigenous people and all who struggle for a better life; that is, despite the several tragic and heart-wrenching offenses committed against us by an increasingly fractured and hypocritical colonial world.
For starters, at least a dozen significant, international and regional gatherings took place this month. Among them, the Zapatista-organized Intercontinental Encuentro, the Boliva-hosted Encounter “For the Historic Victory of the Indigenous Peoples of the World”, and the first of a set of meetings in Chile “…

The struggles and events in September were no exception to those relayed in previous months, but after a long and enduring summer of action for Indigenous People throughout the world, the political climate seems to have shifted slightly in favor of Indigenous People–or at least against irresponsible development.
On top of that, several important achievements were made this month; for one, a National Indigenous body has been formed in Australia, which is historically significant to say the least. In addition, following the lead of Tambogrande (see the video “Worth …

With Indigenous Peoples Day swiftly passing by, Indigenous People throughout the world continue to be subjected to a seemingly endless barrage of offenses by militias, governments, and corporations alike. Efforts to assimilate the People into mainstream society has increased twofold this month, while corporations increasingly work to criminalize, alienate, and divide communities; even make them into enemies to their own ways of life.
At the same time, indigenous peoples and movements continue with their efforts for Justice and accountability, for their rights to be respected—and to ensure their land, identities, and …

July seems to have been a heavy-handed month. Several governments brutally attacked protesters. Some corporations, perhaps for the first time finding a purpose for courts—began efforts to criminalize and silence their opposition, an effort supported by governments. And throughout this month, the world’s American Military Body has begun expanding considerably.
On the Other hand, the efforts of Indigenous Peoples have also increased. At least 2 dozen large-scale events occurred this month, from Summits and Conferences, to General Strikes and numerous days and weeks of action. Some new movements have also begun emerging, along with newly-founded efforts to reclaim traditional lands …
