Some 2,000 indigenous people’s leaders across the Americas have registered for the third Continental Summit for Indigenous People slated for March 26-30 in Guatemala’s Tecpan, according to reports on Sunday.
Domingo Hernandez, a leader of the National Maya Convergence Waq’ib Kiej and a member of the organizing committee, told media in Guatemala City that the main topics for the conference would be globalization and indigenous peoples’ political participation.
The meeting would discuss how to recover indigenous peoples’ autonomy and rights over natural resources, he said.

The Kwakiutl First Nation has called for a demonstration at the Legislature on Monday at 11 am to protest the Province’s decision to transfer land in its territory without consultation. The transfer is part of a deal between Western Forest Products and the Province to take private land out of Tree Farm Licenses on northern Vancouver Island. The Federal Court has dismissed a native title claim over 160,000 square kilometres of land north of Kalgoorlie, in southern Western Australia.
The claim mainly involved the Wongatha group and another seven overlapping claims.
In handing down his decision, Justice Kevin Lindgren said the groups did not all have a similar cultural attachment to the land, and there was no way they could collectively prove such a connection.
