Shell blockaded in Sacred Headwaters

On Tuesday, Aug 21 Shell attempted to resume its coalbed methane operation in the Sacred Headwaters, despite previous warnings of a possible conflict if they attempt to do so. 100 People promptly came together and set up a blockade, preventing Shell from entering.

This is Shell’s first attempt to re-enter the area since 2005, when they were evicted by members of the Tahltan First Nation.

Press Release, from the Dogwood Initiative - Victoria, August 21, 2007 – Shell’s access to the Sacred Headwaters in Northwestern BC was blocked today by over 100 First Nation protesters as the company attempted to resume its coalbed methane operations in the area. British Columbia: Nigeria North?

Three years ago the BC government sold Shell Canada drilling rights to explore for coalbed methane within Tahltan Lands, located in what’s now known as British Columbia, Canada.

The Talthan were never truly consulted in this business deal, hadn’t been informed of the dangers connected to Coalbed Methane, and in fact didn’t even known where Shell was planning to drill until they bulldozed an access road through a Tahltan trapper’s camp in the Sacred Headwaters region.

Once Shell completed drilling some test wells (in 2005), questions started to be asked about the potential impacts on water, wildlife and other matters important to the Tahltan—questions that should have been raised before any sort of deal was made–But of course the Government of BC neglected its responsibilities with regard to the rights of the Tahltan, and afterwards Shell did little to inform …

Help save Apache Sacred Sites from copper mining

Here’s an urgent online petition to help protect Apache Leap and numerous other Sacred sites from desecration by copper mining. The land in question is part of the ancestral lands of the sovereign Native Nations of the Apache, Yavapai, Hopi, and O’Odham.

These Nations have not given permission for this land to be mined—and yet, there’s a bill in US congress about to pass which would grant the Canadian mining Company Resolution Copper, unmitigated access to the land.

In other words, the bill will make them exempt from all NEPA mandated processes, making it legal for them to destroy and violate the land, including areas referred to by non-Indians as Oak Flat, Apache Leap and Devils Canyon. Aswell, one of the few perennial streams in Arizona will likely be emptied of all water—not to mention the ability of the People to …

Protecting Noavose (Bear Butte)

Following is an article by a member of the Cheyenne Nation, who discusses the effort to Protect Noavose (or Nowah’wus. Mato Paha to the Lakota)

First, some background: In early March, bulldozers broke ground for “Sturgis County Line,” a massive new biker bar and concert venue to be located on 600 acres at the base of Bear Butte. Bear Butte (on the outskirts of the Black Hills, near Sturgis, SD) is a sacred place of prayer for over thirty Native Nations across the Great Plains, as well as a state park and a national historic landmark. Each year thousands of Native people travel to pray at Bear Butte.

Arizona entrepreneur Jay Allen originally planned to name his venue “Sacred Grounds” and to erect an 80-foot statue of a Native person outside the bar. He boasted in March 2006 on his …

Tell Barrick to Stop Mining on Sacred Grounds

ALERT!! Please help protect Western Shoshone spiritual areas from Gold Mining - Sign the attached petition and forward to your friends and family.

Tell Barrick to Stop Mining on Sacred Grounds

What would you do if someone came onto your land and started drilling for gold?

It’s happening right now to the Western Shoshone people of Nevada. A mining company called Barrick Gold has been mining Shoshone lands without consent and is now expanding into Mount Tenabo and Horse Canyon, areas considered sacred to the Shoshone.

Even though the Shoshone have repeatedly protested these incursions and the UN stated last year that no companies should mine these Native American tribal lands without the Shoshone’s permission, Barrick has continued its operations.

The Western Shoshone people have invited Barrick officials to discuss the matter, but the company has refused. Even worse, Barrick has continued its activities, bringing in drilling rigs and erecting a locked …
