Campaigner Guide to Mine-Related Finance

April 22, 2008 | Leave a Comment | 236 views

Mines and Communities has made a rather useful resource guide available on their website. Among other things, it provides a database on mining companies, their projects, and the names of the funders…

Now I imagine I don’t have to tell you the significance of having such a resource, so let me just ask you to help spread the word that this guide exists. At the moment it’s only mentioned on one other website.

Published by Nostromo Research, the guide is called From Money to Metals, and it can be downloaded in English and Spanish …

Ways to begin gutting capitalism

June 18, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 1,468 views

As much as “Smashing the State” may be appealing to some, we have arrived at a time where that is no longer enough. This is especially true today, as neoliberal policies and practices continue marching forward, and we find ourselves at a perpetual disadvantage, never really able to “smash” anything. And so it has become necessary for us to move toward building the world we want.

The following text, a slightly trimmed version of a chapter titled “Ways to Begin Gutting Capitalism” is from the book Getting Free by James Herod. It is devoted to just that: practical things …

A World Glance at Internal Displacement

May 17, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 535 views

From IDMC - Some 25 million people worldwide currently live in situations of internal displacement as a result of conflicts or human rights violations. They were forced to flee their homes because their lives were at danger, but unlike refugees they did not cross international borders. Although internally displaced people now outnumber refugees by two to one, their plight receives far less international attention.

Many IDPs remain exposed to violence and other human rights violations during their displacement. Often they have no or only very limited access to food, employment, …

Understanding Empire: Hierarchy, Networks and Clients
by Prof. James Petras, www.globalresearch.ca/
March 19, 2007

The structure of power of the world imperial system can best be understood through a classification of countries according to their political, economic, diplomatic and military organization.

Introduction: The imperial system is much more complex than what is commonly referred to as the “US Empire”. The US Empire, with its vast network of financial investments, military bases, multi-national corporations and client states, is the single most important component of the global imperial system (1). Nevertheless, it is overly simplistic to overlook the complex hierarchies, networks, follower states and clients …

July 27, 2006 | Leave a Comment | 804 views

A few minutes ago I read an article by William Greider, called “Whither the WTO? ” (which follows).

What I found though, were hundreds of news articles and press releases, some of which contradict each other so much, that I thought it be could to post it here

Whither the WTO?
In round-about fashion, the WTO’s failure represents belated vindication for the blue-green movement that arose in Seattle six years ago and the Global Social Forum launched later from Porto Alegre, Brazil. These bottom-up political mobilizations offered an alternative vision …

The struggle for life with dignity is surging in the …
