On August 15, the military junta unexpectedly doubled the price of fuel, which has hit many people very hard. The cost to use transit for instance, increased fivefold.

A series of protests have occurred since then. The one on Wednesday, gathered some 400 people. Security …

Upcoming Protest in Ireland against Shell

September 5, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 522 views

On September 14 there will be a protest in County Mayo, Ireland to highlight the ongoing community campaign against Shell and their proposed, highly controversial Corrib gas development—an onshore refinery and high pressure pipeline leading from the offshore Corrib gas field.

Since it was first proposed in 2000, local communities have been engaging in a steady campaign of opposition to this development, because:

1. Shell and the government plans to take land from local residents for the pipeline.
2. The pipeline will be going through boggy land with a history of …

Sharbot Lake Update: August 17

August 19, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 674 views

As of August 17, The Ardoch Algonquin First Nations and Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nations were given two working days to remove themselves (and anything they brought with them) from the protest site on Hwy #509.

This is the injunction that Frontenac has been pursuing, but as I understand it the injunction was not formally served…. Furthermore, on July 14 (before the injunction was issued), Chief Doreen Davis and Co-Chief Paula Sherman wrote an open letter to the Premier of Ontario (see the letter below), stating that both Nations will no longer participate “with the Court process as it relates …

August 2, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 710 views

At the end of August there’s going to be a protest at the University of Denver’s Korbel Dinner, which is an annual fundraiser for the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS).

This year’s keynote Speaker is Madeline Albright–but the main reason for this protest is because the GSIS intends to honour Wayne Murdy, the CEO of the world’s biggest gold mining company, for his company’s “progressive” work around the world.

Colorado AIM, who teamed up with the Stop Newmont Coalition two years ago, sent out the following information …
