By Nathan Coe, gnn.tv
March 5, 2007

Stop the Clash of Civilizations
from: www.avaaz.org
March 5, 2007
From New York to Baghdad, Madrid to Beirut, talk is rising of a ‘clash of civilizations’ between he West and Islam — no end in sight to the catastrophe in Iraq, war brewing between the US and Iran, Lebanon torn apart again, and still no real Israeli-Palestinian talks. But we know this clash is not about religion or culture. The real cause is politics - the politics of divide-and-rule, on all sides.
This is not the world we want. But it’s the world we’ll end up with, unless we act now. It’s …

Please find enclosed the press release regarding Harriet Nahannee’s death as a direct result of her incarceration. The call for a public inquiry to answer the below questions has gone out and we are also forwarding it to the European Support groups, who are looking into a campaign on Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples especially in light of the 2010 Olympics being railroaded into Aboriginal Territories and Harriet losing her life trying to stop it.
As you all know elder and environmental activist, Betty Krawczyk, 78, will be sentenced by the same judge, Mme Justice Brown, who sent Harriet to jail …

(Duckwater — February 2007) The Western Shoshone Nation responds to the threat of another explosion at the Nevada Test Site code named “Divine Strake” intended to simulate effects of a nuclear weapon. The Western Shoshone government calls attention to the legacy of adverse health impacts and disproportionate burden of risk borne by the people downwind. The US has conducted more than 1000 explosions for development of weapons of mass destruction within the boundaries of the Western Shoshone Nation identified by the Treaty of Ruby Valley in 1863, killing thousands of Americans and Western Shoshone nationals alike. The potential for …

Brisbane, Australia:The Queensland Dept of Public Prosecution’s disgusting decision to ignore the Deputy Coroner’s findings that the Qld police killed Mulrinji,an indigenous man, in November 2004 while he was in police custody –has been met with community disbelief. The DPP wants us to believe that Mulrinji “fell” (getting 4 broken ribs and a liver split in two through the “fall”)and that the cop who arrested him — the 6?7? tall Chris Hurley — played no role in his death.

Phra Supoj Suvacano, a Buddhist monk, was killed for challenging the efforts of businessmen to take control of forest lands belonging to the temple and his local community. One year after his death, there have been no signs of progress. He is one of more than 20 defenders killed in the last five years.
This month, Human Rights First released a report documenting these attacks on defenders as well as arbitrary arrests and disappearances in the conflict area of southern Thailand. It’s called Losing Ground: Human Rights Defenders and Counterterrorism in Thailand.
