Ecuador’s Black Plague

June 30, 2007 | One Comment | 726 views

From 1964 to 1992 Texaco (now Chevron) built and operated oil exploration and production facilities in the northern region of the Ecuadorian Amazon, known as the “Oriente”.

When the oil company arrived in the region, an area of more than 400,000 hectares was pristine rainforest inhabited by indigenous communities living in the ancestral style, in harmony with their natural habitat. Nearly three decades later, when Texaco pulled out, a vast area had been environmentally devastated.

Today, dozens of communities continue to suffer severe health effects, including surging rates of cancer. Meanwhile, indigenous …

He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future — Adolf Hitler

One more line on an endless list of repugnant schemes, John Howard recently announced a “national emergency” plan to impose draconian measures on as many as 60 Indigenous communities in the Northern territory of Australia, under the guise of protecting children from Sexual abuse.

The plan, as pointed out by the Socialist Equality Party of Australia, is as follows:

1. Welfare and family payments will be halved, with the seized portions transferred to food and clothing vouchers. All payments will …

Womanhood - an acceptable trade-off for doing business?

June 17, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 620 views

In the last couple generations, the neoliberal economic model—along with the very handy belief system it contains—has been bleeding into the lives and ways of Indigenous People in North America. Of course we see it happening in many places around the world, but nothing compared to the frequency and extent it is happening on this land; specifically among those who lead/govern/manage the people.

In many cases there is an immeasurable cost attached to doing business like this. Sometimes, a Tribal Council will alienate and banish people from the Nation; other times, …

Coca Cola - A Hero to the Land, A hero to the People.

June 8, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 725 views

We are told by Classical Western mythology that a hero is a being of great strength and courage, celebrated for bold exploits, and who is the offspring of no less than a mortal and a god.

Coca-Cola doesn’t quite fit this profile, I know. But if we change a few words–courage to audacity and strength to compulsion– I think we’ll find Coca Cola standing tall and proud. A hero among Men.

From oneworld.net - The Coca-Cola company has been charged with illegally seizing lands communally owned by small farmers and …

A Plea from the Marshall Islands

May 12, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 537 views

Saludos desde Mayaguez, Puerto Rico — During our struggle to get the US Navy to stop bombing our island municipality of Vieques, people from all over the world gave us their solidarity. A Land is Life Conference took place in Vieques. People from Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Guam and the Philippines came to share their experiences and show solidarity for our struggle. The US no longer bombs Vieques. But it has left its toxic wastes there to continue contaminating the land. Its clean up operations are not careful of the islands eco system nor do …

Tell Barrick to Stop Mining on Sacred Grounds

What would you do if someone came onto your land and started drilling for gold?

It’s happening right now to the Western Shoshone people of Nevada. A mining company called Barrick Gold has been mining Shoshone lands without consent and is now expanding into Mount Tenabo and Horse Canyon, areas considered sacred to the Shoshone.

Even though the Shoshone have repeatedly protested these incursions and the UN stated last year …

from The First Peoples Human Rights Coalition
March 15, 2007

Important action: ‘Special Procedures’ have been an essential factor in the voices ‘of the voiceless’ being heard internationally. Some governments at the Human Rights Council are now “proposing changes that would cripple the ability of Special Procedures to promote and protect human rights effectively.” We urge you to stand up for the experts, representatives, and Special Rapporteurs who have bravely stood up for us.

Land Acquisition In Bastar At A Critical Stage
By Debaranjan Sarangi, Countercurrents.org
March 15, 2007

The situation in Bastar is at a critical stage, with clashes on 27-28 Feb trying to force land acquisition for Tata’s steel plant. The “manufactured civil war” pursued by Salwa Judum continues with at least 80,000 tribal refugees in what are virtually concentration camps.

The steel plant is planned on 2,000+ hectares of tribal land belonging to 10 villages in Lohandiguda block, near the amazing Chitrakot waterfall on Indravati river. The agreement for the plant was signed between the Chhattisgarh Govt & Tata in June 2005 - precisely …
