New Zealand prides itself on human rights, social compassion and political “neutrality”. Moreover, New Zealanders pride themselves on being “peace loving” people. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. These images are a distortion of reality. New Zealand is a fully-fledged member of America’s war on Muslims.

I recently spent sometime in New Zealand. As an Australian citizen, I do not need visa to enter or work in New Zealand. However, on my arrival from Melbourne at Wellington Airport, I was singled-out for “questioning” and thorough search. I …

The first two articles (FT 30/01 and 10/02) provided enough footing and directions into the subject of indigenous issues, specifically on the fate of indigenous people in developed and developing countries. This article will outline some background into the challenges and frustrations facing native people in developed nations with the case study of the Maori

Oral history and legends explain how the Land of the Long White Clouds’ Aotearoa was first inhabited by seafaring Polynesians from Hawaiki (Hawaii) who later called themselves as Maoriori.

Protesters occupying a 1100ha block of Crown-owned Coromandel Peninsula land say they will stay as long as it takes to get back what they see as rightfully theirs.

The group of Hauraki Maori moved on to Whenuakite Station, between Whitianga and Tairua, on Sunday morning.

Ngati Hei spokesman Joe Davis said the land should be handed back to Hauraki Maori as part of their Treaty of Waitangi settlement deal.

“It’s a repossession, not an occupation,” Mr Davis said.

Feb 6 - New Zealanders are marking the 167th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

They have started with the traditional dawn service at Paihia in the Bay of Islands.

The karakia or blessing heralds the start of Waitangi Day commemorations at the site where Maori and European settlers agreed on a treaty on February 6, 1840.

It has helped define New Zealand as a nation and guarantee Maori sovereign rights ever since and, according to Prime Minister Helen Clark, is still a relevant touchstone for national unity.

New Zealand Government defies UN majority on indigenous rights

October 13, 2006 | Leave a Comment | 842 views

The Green Party today expressed its extreme disappointment at the Government’s negative response to the UN draft declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples, which was recently passed by a two thirds majority of member countries on the UN Human Rights Council.

“Indigenous peoples from around the world have been negotiating this document for over a decade, in a process that began in 1985. They have repeatedly made concessions to the views of states such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States, yet those governments have continued to push their own integrationist agenda,” Green Party Maori Affairs Spokesperson Metiria …

Few, if any full Maori left comment horrifies

By SUE EDEN, 27 September 2006 - National leader Don Brash has been accused of using the same argument against Maori that was used in the United States in the 1700s when black people were denied civil rights.

Dr Brash said in the Herald on Sunday that there were “few, if any” full-blooded Maori left.

“There are clearly many New Zealanders who do see themselves as distinctly and distinctively Maori but it is also clear there are few, if any, fully Maori left here. There has been a lot of intermarriage and that has been welcome.”

Dr Brash had been asked to comment …
