30 Days: Life on an Indian Reservation

July 19, 2008 | Leave a Comment | 634 views

Growing up in the US, the documentarian Morgan Spurlock wasn’t any different from most Americans (and Canadians); knowing very little about indigenous people, their history, or the problems they face today.

And so, for the season finale of his television series 30 Days, Morgan decided to “leave America as he knows it, without ever actually leaving US soil, to live with a people who many see as refugees in their own country:” the Navajo.

Hulu.com has the full 30 Days episode, “Life on an Indian Reservation”, available on their website. You can watch it below, however, only if you’re in …

US Moves to Clean Up Uranium on Navajo Land

After more than forty years, the U.S. government is finally moving to clean up the uranium waste on Navajo lands.

On June 13, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a five-year plan to start cleaning the radioactive waste left by more than 40 years of mining uranium on Navajo lands.

From 1944 to 1986, companies grabbed more than 40 million tons of uranium, producing 996 pounds of radioactive waste for every 4 pounds of uranium extracted. A great deal of that waste has never been cleaned up.

As a result, for three generations …

June 16, 2008 | Leave a Comment | 411 views

Over the weekend, New Mexico’s state Cultural Properties Review Committee voted 4-2 in favour of giving Mount Taylor emergency protection as a cultural property.

Held Sacred by the Navajo, Hopi, Acoma, Laguna and Zuni Nations, uranium mining companies recently set their sights on the mountain, filing permits to start more than 50 exploratory drilling projects.

As noted in Las Cruces-Sun, the five Nations immediately came forward and “asked the state to approve the listing… to protect it from an anticipated uranium mining boom, according to the nomination report.”

The listing will last for one year, …

A group of nomadic Navajo en route to support the Tyendinaga Mohawks were recently arrested in Ontario, as Suspected Terrorists.

The group of 28—who were unarmed and ranged between the ages of two and 72—travelled from the Arizona desert to British Columbia and then across Canada with several horses in tow.

The whole journey was without incident, but once they arrived in Ontario, they started getting pulled over. First in Wawa, then in Sault St. Marie, and finally in Kaladar (see map) where they were all arrested and put …

Womanhood - an acceptable trade-off for doing business?

June 17, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 837 views

In the last couple generations, the neoliberal economic model—along with the very handy belief system it contains—has been bleeding into the lives and ways of Indigenous People in North America. Of course we see it happening in many places around the world, but nothing compared to the frequency and extent it is happening on this land; specifically among those who lead/govern/manage the people.

In many cases there is an immeasurable cost attached to doing business like this. Sometimes, a Tribal Council will alienate and banish people from the Nation; other times, …

Resisting Desert Rock

Indigenous resistance against the proposed Desert Rock coal-fired power plant continues despite intimidation and harassment.

On the Navajo Reservation of New Mexico, indigenous elders and youth have been battling energy giants and their plan to construct a new coal-fired power plant on Navajo lands in an attempt to protect their lands and traditions. In December of 2006, resisters erected a barricade and engaged in a tense standoff with law enforcement. Though the barricade has since been removed, indigenous resisters remain on site to vigil and protest against the destruction of their sacred
