Lubicons walk out of AUC hearing

April 17, 2008 | One Comment | 337 views

“If TransCanada tries to build this pipeline across unceded Lubicon Territory without Lubicon consent — based on approval of an application to an Alberta Government regulatory agency that does not have legitimate authority in unceded Lubicon Territory — the Lubicon people will oppose it every inch of the way, every way we can, for as long as TransCanada Pipelines tries to operate in Lubicon Territory.”

These are the concluding remarks of a statement delivered earlier this week by the Lubicon Cree Nation at an Alberta Utilities Commission hearing in Edmonton. A Lubicon Press …

TransCanada Investors concerned over Lubicon rights abuse

February 28, 2008 | 2 Comments | 376 views

In their plans to build a jumbo pipeline across unceded Lubicon territory, TransCanada’s failure to consult and address the concerns of the Lubicon Cree has begun ricocheting back at the company.

According to a Press Release by the Friends of the Lubicon dated February 26, TransCanada shareholders have learned of the failure and are now “taking the company to task for mismanaging the issue of aboriginal land rights and rightly raising the possibility of delays and/or cancellation of the project if Lubicon land rights are not properly addressed by the …

A Fight Against Time

February 9, 2008 | One Comment | 516 views

A Fight Against Time is a documentary filmed in 1995 that examines the plight of the Lubicon Cree Nation.

In 1971, the Province of Alberta declared the Lubicon were “squatters on Crown land,” and started building a road so companies could exploit the resources in the area. After the road was finished, companies firmly rooted themselves within the Lubicon’s traditional land base. This proved to be drastic for the Lubicon.

For nearly 15 years, they pursued legal action against the government, but every attempt for justice seemed to have been blocked by the courts. Meanwhile, both the Provincial and Federal governments …

Profit and Power at the expense of the Lubicon

February 3, 2008 | 3 Comments | 520 views

According to a recent communique from Friends of the Lubicon, TransCanada officials have decided to proceed with their application to build a new jumbo gas pipeline across unceded Lubicon Territory.

Not too long ago they were asked to alter their ‘project timelines’ until they adequately respond to the social, environment, and cultural concerns held by the Lubicon Cree Nation. However, it would seem Transcanada is no the lest bit interested in doing so, nevermind respect the rights of the Lubicon or hold onto any shred of moral and social …

Tar Sands and Canada’s violation of Indigenous People

October 25, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 819 views

The Dominion has recently published it’s special issue on the Alberta tar sands; and has since last Monday , been publishing roughly one article a day about this massive, barely understood human rights and environmental disaster.

Four of the articles published so far have focused on the impact of tar sands development on indigenous people. In light of the seriousness of this issue and in respect to the effort of the Dominion to raise peoples awareness, I thought I’d briefly outline them…

Lubicon response to bald-faced lies about Lubicon water situation
from Friends of the Lubicon, March 16, 2007

Below please find an article from the magazine Alberta Views on the Lubicon situation called “No Deal”. Also, please find a letter to Alberta Views from Lubicon Elder Reinie Jobin regarding purposefully malicious, reprehensible bald-faced lies told about the terrible Lubicon water situation by a cowardly, unnamed federal government negotiator in the Alberta Views article.

UN to discuss Alberta’s Lubicon Cree

GENEVA/630 CHED - A UN Committee has started hearings in Geneva with one of the items on the agenda the Lubicon Cree of Northern Alberta.

The small band, which lives in an oil-rich area east of Peace River, has never signed a treaty with the federal government.

The problem is that oil companies and logging companies have moved in to traditional Lubicon territory. Land the Indians say they haven’t given up title to.

Two UN committees have already declared Canada to be in violation of international agreements — an agreement on civil and political rights …

Rebutting Minister Prentice’s misinformation

December 22, 2006 | Leave a Comment | 889 views

Attached for your information is a copy of a letter which Indian Affairs Minister sent a Lubicon supporter in BC. It’s a form letter which is undoubtedly also being sent to others writing the Minister about lack of Lubicon negotiations. Mr. Prentice’s letter deserves comment and response.

Mr. Prentice says “At no time have the federal negotiators taken the position that they have no
mandate to negotiate issues of self-government and compensation”. In fact that’s exactly the position taken by federal negotiators in November of 2003 and subsequently.

One does not need to look to numerous documents in which the position of …

Assembly of Chiefs call for expedited resolution of Lubicon land rights

November 26, 2006 | Leave a Comment | 713 views

Last month the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs of Alberta voted unanimously to support a resolution calling on the governments of Canada and Alberta to “expedite resolution to the outstanding claims of the Lubicon First Nation.”

The Chiefs noted that “there is a need to deliver a strong and unified message to the Crown from this Assembly in support of the Lubicon First Nation and its citizens.”

The Assembly includes Chiefs from Treaties 6, 7 and 8.

Resolutions of this sort from organizations in all walks of life — unions, political parties, non-governmental organizations, faith groups, constituency, neighbourhood, ratepayer, business and professional associations — …

Attached for your information are copies of a letter to Canadian Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice from a Belgian support group, a copy of Mr. Prentice’s July 28th reply; and a copy of the Belgian group’s reaction to the letter they received from Mr. Prentice. Mr. Prentice’s letter to the Belgian support group is similar to letters currently being sent to Lubicon supporters across Canada and around the world.

Notably the Minister’s letters to Lubicon supporters are little more than the latest variant on …
