Sweet Crude, a documentary now in post-production, tells the story of Nigeria’s Niger Delta and the struggle of the People in the region. For 50 years, the people in the region known as the ’south-south’ have lived a life of hopelessness and desperation as they watch the land become devastated, and their own lives become unsustainable—not just because of the 6,000 reported oil spills (less than 50% of which are cleaned) rampant gas flaring (2.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day) and several major pipeline explosions that …

Well, the bills which grant the government of Australia power to encroach upon, invade, and determine the lives of Indigenous People in the Northern Territory came to pass in a near-unanimous vote of 56 to 6.

All Indigenous on Welfare have automatically had 50% of their payments ‘quarantined.’ The government can ‘observe’ any meeting held by Aboriginal or non Aboriginal organizations in the Territory which provide services to Aboriginal communities. The inter-governmental effort to prohibit democracy

July 30, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 863 views

The criminalization of activism seems to have become a trend this month. Governments all around the world are increasingly criminalizing democracy, prohibiting the pursuit of Justice, and preventing any real chance of Corporate and Governmental Responsibility.

This trend of course, comes as a heavy-handed bureaucratic response to activists and indigenous peoples increased efforts to protect the land, to demand accountability and Justice, and to insist that governments and corporations stop infringing on our lives and preventing us from having our needs met—so they can get what they want. Needs are …

Correction: Frontenac is actually suing for 77 million. Please see here for details.

A sad and irritating note. Following the trend that began two months ago when CN-Rail launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Mohawk activists from the community of Tyendinaga—Yesterday the Algonquins were blind-sided with a million dollar lawsuit of their own. What are the charges, I wonder—Trespassing on their own territory???!!!

Are these the changes Jim Prentice was promising?

Here’s the Update from Janie Jamieson:

Just a quick update on the uranium mine at Sharbot Lake. Yesterday CANADA and FRONTENAC VENTURES (mining company) upped the ante …
