A Plea from the Marshall Islands

Saludos desde Mayaguez, Puerto Rico — During our struggle to get the US Navy to stop bombing our island municipality of Vieques, people from all over the world gave us their solidarity. A Land is Life Conference took place in Vieques. People from Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Guam and the Philippines came to share their experiences and show solidarity for our struggle. The US no longer bombs Vieques. But it has left its toxic wastes there to continue contaminating the land. Its clean up operations are not careful of the islands eco system nor do they use the best technology avalable to minimize the contamination.

The people of the Marshall Islands are the victims of 67 atomic bombs which were “tested” there by the US Government. The “testing” took place while the Marshalls was …

LA-Based Oil Giant’s Conduct Leads to Legal Liability in the US

From Amazon Watch - Los Angeles, CA – A report released today (link below), on the eve of Occidental Petroleum’s (Oxy) annual general meeting (AGM), reveals that the LA-based oil giant deliberately ignored industry standards and employed out-of-date practices for 30 years, resulting in severe cadmium and lead poisoning among indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon.

According to the report, based on information gathered by a team of experts in May 2006 – including a doctor, nurse, lawyers, soil scientist, agronomist, environmental engineer, and chemist – children from five Achuar communities in the Corrientes River basin of the Peruvian Amazon now have unusually high concentrations of lead and cadmium in their blood, at levels known to cause developmental problems.

Andrés Sandi Mucushua, President of the Federation of Native Communities of the Corrientes River (FECONACO), said: “My people have suffered for 35 …

Justice for murdered Nahuatl Elder

Justice for Ernestina Ascencio Rosario, Nahua, from Soledad Atzompa, Sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz!
(from http://tashunkawitkobrigade.blogspot.com/)

JUSTICE FOR ERNESTINA - JUSTICIA PARA ERNESTINA

We demand that the Mexican federal government, Mexican authorities, and the many institutions to which this concerns, fulfill the recommendations put forward by Amnesty International (AI) and the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), in relation to the repeated rape, injuries, murder and whatever will become of Ernestina Ascencio Rosario, our indigenous compatriot, at the hands of presumed Mexican military personnel.

Based on the second autopsy that reiterates that she was raped, we categorically reject Felipe Calderon Hinojosa’s assertion seeking to exonerate the rapist and murderous military soldiers.

We express our profound concern at the exculpatory manifestations expressed by local and federal authorities, as well as by those who are supposedly bound, ethically and legally, to defend human rights, as is the case of the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH) and its …
