Drowned Out

Created with no budget or film crew, Drowned Out tells the story of the Jalsindhi villagers in central India, and their struggle to prevent the destruction of their land as well as their own displacement. The Jalsindhi are Adivasis - the original inhabitants of India - who have farmed their land by the Narmada River for at least 12 generations.

The Narmada Valley Development Project, the single largest river development scheme in India and one of the largest hydroelectric projects in the world, aims to build more than 3,000 large and small dams on the Narmada river, displacing hundreds of thousands and severely effecting over one million people; among them, the Jalsindhi.

The Adivasis are faced with three choices today: move to a government resettlement site with salty drinking water and infertile land; accept paltry cash compensation and head for a big city slum; or stay at home and drown. …

Judge suspends La Parota dam

Last week, a Judge in the state of Guerrero, Mexico ordered the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to suspend any further construction of La Parota dam.

The order came as a response to an August 14 request by campesinos for an injunction pending resolution of a lawsuit they filed to stop La Parota altogether. The judge ruled that continuing the project may cause “irreparable damages” to the campesinos. See here for background news and information.

From WW4 Report - On Sept. 13 Mexican federal district judge Livia Lizbeth Larumbe Radilla, based in Acapulco in the southern state of Guerrero, ordered the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to suspend further construction of La Parota hydroelectric dam across the Papagayo River. The judge’s order came in response to an Aug. 14 request by campesinos living in Guerrero’s Cacahuatepec municipality for …

Mexican Peasants Said ‘No’ to La Parota Dam

This past Sunday an assembly was held in the Acapulco municipality of Guerrero, Mexico to decide upon the fate of La Parota Dam…. This occurred a little over a week after Senator Felix Salgado Macedonio said the People who would be effected by the completion of La Parota must be allowed to do just that: decide on whether or not la Parota may be completed.

The community of Cacahuatepec agreed to reject La Parota.

A Spokesperson from the Council of Ejidos and Communities Against La Parota Dam (CECOP) cried out “La Parota is over, colleagues, it is literally over, no more assemblies!” after he finished reading the agreement of the community.

Unfortunately, unsuprisingly—the Federal Electricity Commission considers the decision to be null—because they say the assembly was not ‘informative enough.’

From Real World Radio - Sunday’s assembly in Aguascalientes town, within …

Day 37 of Hunger strike for Lepcha Youth

For 37 days now Members of the Lepcha tribe of Sikkim, mostly youth, have been on an indefinite fast (satyagraha) demanding the immediate scrapping of atleast 6 of the seven hydro dams proposed for development in the region of Dzongu— the homeland of the Lepcha people. The Lepcha say these projects will “devastate the region from head to toe.”

As noted here, the government of Sikkim has in the past been negotiable; having been one of the first States in India to ban plastic bags, the Sikkim government has also stopped other hydro projects in the past (because of similar hunger strikes by the Buddhist community). However today the government gave 24 hrs for the indefinite hunger strike to be called off, or else it will be deemed illegal and action will be taken against them.

A representative from …

Blockade set up on road to Conawapa Dam

Hunters and Trappers from the Fox Lake Cree in Northern Manitoba set up a blockade yesterday, on the road leading to the Conawapa dam. They say the noise linked to exploration activities is scaring off their game.

Apparently, “Manitoba Hydro is negotiating with the band leadership to find a way to accommodate the hunters’ concerns—” providing of course they can keep their construction schedule.

From the Winnipeg Free Press - Manitoba Hydro president Bob Brennan said he is talking to the band leadership of the Gillam-area Fox Lake Cree Nation, 765 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg about the blockade.

The hunters are from Fox Lake. They erected the blockade Monday near the entrance of a road that is the only access into the Conawapa Dam exploration site. The site also houses construction workers to buildthe dam.

The blockade is not endorsed by …

More actions to report from Iceland

Turns out Saving Iceland’s campaign wasn’t done yet… Thanks to indymedia for the update, and also for Saving Iceland itself, particularly for pointing out how integral aluminum is to the weapons industry. Now I know it’s not just used for making cheese (that’s right) and pots and plastic…

From Indyemdia - The resistance against heavy industry and large dams in Iceland has heated up, and not just because of global warming. The week began with Reykjavik’s first Reclaim the Streets on the 14th of July, where a rebel clown army raved in opposition to aluminium. The day after a public meeting was held with the people of Thorlakshöfn (named as a site for two new aluminum smelters) and activists from anti-heavy industry struggles in South Africa and Trinidad. On Wednesday the 18th, Saving Iceland closed the supply …

Yacyreta Dam: A Monument to Corruption

A festival has recently begun in Buenos Aires, Argentina — in an effort to support the thousands of People affected by Yacyreta dam, one of the longest–running unfinished hydroelectric projects in the world. Construction of the dam began in 1979 — and so far over 80,000 People have been effected.

The Dam, located on the Paraná River, is a collaborative effort between Argentina and Paraguay. Widely regarded as a monument to corruption, the project has thus far been plagued with political delays, corruption, disputes, and abuses/repression of the effected. Heavily funded by both the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (1) — the dam has so far cost $10 billion.

As we should except, the communities living in the region were never consulted, nor received any assistance or efforts from anyone to provide equitable accommodations.

In 1996, the …
