VANCOUVER - A community is in mourning following news of the death of a great-grandmother who fought to defend aboriginal rights and the environment. Activist Harriet Nahanee died at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver on Saturday, February 24, one month after she was sentenced to fourteen days in jail for protesting the destruction of a wetlands for a highway bypass.

Both of these, I feel, exemplify how small and petty various governments and so-called authorities with special-interests are — that they would arrest and seek to punish Grandmothers - Grandmothers! who did nothing but work for their People, and to protect the land. A native great-grandmother has been arrested in a bid to stop B.C.’s first new metal mine in 10 years.
BCMetals Corp. believes the Red Chris mine in northern B.C. contains almost a million tonnes of copper and 1.2 million ounces of gold.
But Tahltan elder Lillian Moyer, 67, who was arrested Saturday, says the proposed open-pit operation south of Dease Lake would violate sacred ground, threaten traditional hunting land and ruin fisheries.
