The Pan Am Games, set to begin in Rio de Janeiro next week, is expected to bring an increase of violence—particularly against the people living in the slums of Rio. Since the beginning of the year, military/police violence has dramatically increased, with the support of a National Security Force that’s been employed specifically for the games.

One recent incident occured on June 27, when an armed police force ordered “not to take any prisoners,” executed 19 people. There is also a further concern that, since this recent “operation” was …

Indigenous People and Satellite technology

June 11, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 873 views

For as long as Indigenous People have been defending themselves from the encroachment of modern civilization, there has been a steady debate regarding the so-called need for indigenous people to modernize themselves, “lest perish by the sheer weight of their own irrelevance.”

We can talk more about this another day. For now here are a couple recent stories about how technology, specifically satellite imaging, is being used to assist indigenous people… (I am actually hearing about the utilization of satellite technology for this ends. See my post Protecting Shipibo Territory for another example.)

The Brazilian government has discovered signs of some of the world’s last uncontacted tribes living near the border with Peru.

The Indians are believed to have fled illegal mahogany logging sweeping through Peru’s rainforests, destroying the Indians’ homelands and forcing them out of their traditional territory.

During an aerial inspection of the area, Brazilian government officials spotted a village and various hunting camps. They also found felled mahogany trees and drums of chainsaw oil floating down the Envira River.

The Brazilian government estimates that there are already three different uncontacted groups living in this …
