Syngenta-hired militia attacks peaceful occupation

On Sunday, Via Campesina peacefully occupied an experimental GMO field of the Swiss company Syngenta in the state of Parana, Brazil, when it was attacked by an armed militia that killed one and critically injured 6 others.

From August 31 to September 2, around 300 young people from the Tupinambá, Pataxó Hã-Hã-Hãe, Pataxó and Tuxá (state of Bahia), Tupinikim (state of Espírito Santo) and Xukuru (state of Pernambuco) peoples gathered at the 3rd seminar of Tupinambá young people at Serra do Padeiro in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
The Tupinambá (also known as the Tupi) have recently begun strengthening their struggle, encouraging its young people to organize themselves.

Yanomami oppose mining on their land

The Yanomami have been recently speaking out against a new law in Brazil which if approved, would allow mining on indigenous territories.
Davi Yanomami, was recently interviewed by Survival International, telling them: “I am very worried about the mining law. It will destroy our heartland. We use the water that flows through Yanomami land for drinking, cooking, washing and bathing.”

Recently, the Enawene-Nawe, a people indigenous to the Juruena River basin in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil, invited Greenpeace to visit them and document their ways of life, which Greenpeace had previously expressed an interest in doing.
Greenpeace accepted, and set out, accompanied by OPAN (Native Amazon Operation) members and 2 european journalists. But upon arriving on August 20, 2007—farmers, land owners, and politicians of the Brazilian municipality of Juína (Mato Grosso state) ‘warned’ them that they will not be permitted to visit the Enawene-Nawe.

The Cimi-Assessoria de Imprensa, announced today that on August 28, the Brazilian government signed two decrees for the Tupinikim/Guarani, granting them title to 18,070 hectares of lands in the municipality of Aracruz, state of Espirito Santo, Brazil.

On a recent expedition to supervise the Peru-Brazil border, the Brazilian Ashaninkas received death threats from a task leader of the Peruvian company Venao Forestal—raising concerns about the possibility of violent clashes in the future. Venao is also manipulating and creating conflict among the Ashaninka, exploiting them for wood.
Venao is one of many companies that illegally crosses into Brazil to log trees like mahogany and cedar.

Tupinikim and Guarani reclamation over - evicted again.

On July 23, the Tupinikim and Guarani along with several Quilombolas began an effort to reclaim 11,009 hectares of land in Espiritu Santo, Brazil— land which is currently occupied and used by Aracruz Cellulose for a Eucalyptus Plantation.
