Next month, the Tohono O’odham will be hosting the 2nd Indigenous Peoples’ Border Summit of the Americas. It will run from November 7-10 at the San Xavier Community Center, 2018 W. San Xavier Rd, Tohono O’odham Nation.

Ashaninka threatened, prepared to take action

On a recent expedition to supervise the Peru-Brazil border, the Brazilian Ashaninkas received death threats from a task leader of the Peruvian company Venao Forestal—raising concerns about the possibility of violent clashes in the future. Venao is also manipulating and creating conflict among the Ashaninka, exploiting them for wood.

Venao is one of many companies that illegally crosses into Brazil to log trees like mahogany and cedar.

On Friday, The Organization of Indigenous People (OIS) submitted a petition to the Surinamese government and the French ambassador to Suriname, calling for an end to activities in the recently created two million hectare French Guiana Park
