The People of Bhopal Lead the Way to Justice

Some important news came out of India last month that didn’t get much play here in the West, and perhaps for good reason. On August 8, the People of Bhopal won a major victory when the Indian government agreed to meet the full set of demands issued by the ‘Walk Your Talk’ campaign for justice in Bhopal.

That means the government has committed itself to economically rehabilitate Bhopal’s chemical disaster survivors, remediate the disaster site, and pursue legal action against Union Carbide and Dow Chemical.

Commission Promised for Bhopal Victims

After protesting for a solid three months, victims of the 1984 Bhopal chemical disaster have gained some important victories. On May 29th, the Prime Minister of India agreed to some of their key demands: that a commission would be established to carry out their medical, social, economic, and environmental rehabilitation; and that by the end of this year Bhopali’s will have safe water (it is still contaminated from the massive chemical spill which occurred 23 years ago).

25th Day of indefinite fast continues in Bhopal

June 30 - Today is the 25th day of the dharna (indefinite fast) which began on June 6th, in protest to the mass displacement caused by the Indira Sagar dam and Omkareshwar dam in India. Nine people are currently fasting, with about half of those displaced (5000 people) sitting with them.

The following is some recent news, background, and a video about the 1984 Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India which killed over 20,000 people and left over 100,000 severely disabled.

On December 3rd, 1984, thousands of people in Bhopal, India, were gassed to death after a catastrophic chemical leak at a Union Carbide pesticide plant. More than 150,000 people (1) were left severely disabled - of whom 22,000 (2) have since died of their injuries - in a disaster now widely acknowledged as the world’s worst-ever industrial disaster.
