More Repression in Oaxaca

July 17, 2007 | 2 Comments | 1,037 views

On July 16, violence again broke out in Oaxaca—by the same forces that carried out the widespread torture, illegal detentions and assassinations in 2006. This time, as noted by Rights Action, it was in the name of protecting tourism. The Oaxaca Solidarity Network (OSN info@oaxacasolidarity.org) has sent out the following information regarding the attacks.

Action and Dialogue in Australia - July 2007

July 9, 2007 | 4 Comments | 1,060 views

The Australian government likes to think it’s in a position of absolute power. Like many governments around the world, they go ahead doing whatever they want with little regard for law or for how their actions will effect the people. Why should they care? They tell us they are the law, and that we are their people.

The sad irony is Governments are not all-powerful sovereign entities. In fact, they are nothing more than corporations, made up of various individuals whom of course hold various common interests. Two of those …

Trailers making people sick to be sold anyways

July 2, 2007 | Leave a Comment | 825 views

By now you know of America's (lack of) response when Hurricane Katrina touched down, yes?

Well, after FEMA got in gear they ordered tens of thousands of trailers for those displaced by the Hurricane. They ended up not sending out all the trailers though (because of the rough environment, apparently) which in hindsight may have been a good decision, because reports are now coming in that people living in those trailers are getting sick…

The cause? Formaldehyde, which is used to make the particle board (floors and cabinets) in …

Ecuador’s Black Plague

June 30, 2007 | One Comment | 1,042 views

From 1964 to 1992 Texaco (now Chevron) built and operated oil exploration and production facilities in the northern region of the Ecuadorian Amazon, known as the “Oriente”.

When the oil company arrived in the region, an area of more than 400,000 hectares was pristine rainforest inhabited by indigenous communities living in the ancestral style, in harmony with their natural habitat. Nearly three decades later, when Texaco pulled out, a vast area had been environmentally devastated.

Today, dozens of communities continue to suffer severe health effects, including surging rates of cancer. Meanwhile, indigenous …

The Ipperwash Inquiry which began in Novermber 2003, finally came to an end yesterday. The final report concludes that the government of former Ontario premier Mike Harris, Ottawa and the OPP all bear responsibility for the events that led to the death of Dudley George in 1995.

A number of recommendations have been made in the report. Among them:

The OPP should establish a formal consultation committee with major aboriginal …

Poisoned by Pesticide, Bananeras rise up!

May 31, 2007 | One Comment | 656 views

Banana workers in Nicaragua, who after years of work in the fields, say pesticide use has made them sterile. They are suing Dow, Dole and other firms in L.A.

From www.latimes.com - THE people crammed into the stifling basketball gym. They filled the court, lined the walls and tumbled beyond the doors onto the sun- blistered streets.

They had gathered to hear a promise of justice.

Many had spent their lives toiling on banana plantations that U.S. companies operated in this region some 30 years ago. By day, the workers …
