I am studying in Belize for four months, and having a Mayan professor and living near Mayan villages, you better bet that governmental discrimination is still a huge issue, and as many Mayan villages in the South are at risk of losing their culture do to Westernization, it is necessary to aim to preserve Mayan way of life as much as possible. I'm doing a project on how Mayan women play into the matter, through leadership and solidarity.

That's too bad the government is stomping over the Belizean people and their rights like that. I spent a vacation in Belize but didn't get to see the brutality of the Belize government. I was actually on a very touristy island called San Pedro Belize but I did see some indigenous to Belize there selling jewelry and blankets. The country is pretty civilized and safe and so it was a big surprise to read this about their government and how they treat their own people.
