Gareth, welcome.

The article is a bit Eurocentric, but he did bring up the point about how the treaty was signed under pressure ("forcefully signed by just a handful of Maori chiefs...")

As for the matter of the different versions of the treaty -- Gareth, he's not saying there was a mistake in translating, but that the Maori were intentionally misled by the colonists involved in the treaty process.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised of this in the least, as this happened often throughout the world (sometimes guns were pointed, other times Chiefs were given massive amounts of alcohol - then when they're so drunk they can't even think, they would be gently lulled into signing the paper.)

As to whether or Not this is the case with this treaty, it's very difficult for anyone to say one way or the other -- but given Colonial History, I would sooner believe the Maori were coerced and manipulated over the idea they willfully sacrificed their Sovereignty, rights and Nation to be subjects of a foreign entity that still manages to bring little to nothing of real benefit to the Maori.

Respectfully - Ahni.

wrong! how could anything like this be published or put on the internet where younger people researching this topic of which cant tell which is right and wrong can try to comprehend this information, sections of the information concerning the treaty of waitangi is incorrect and very eurocentric. the reason the treaty was hurried and signed hastily was because there was enormous pressure from the british government, and not because they "wanted to". please dont insult my home country by saying that the missionaries " messed up" by not translating. many maori had been in contact with the british for years and themselves learnt the english language and therefore knew exaclty what they were signing! although this can be a common error, it should not be made publice like this as it is not correct!
