Hi Rose. A couple things...

Fist, I gotta ask - Is the lead paint inside or outside the house? if it's outside, you may want to make sure your kids don't play in any soil around the house because there will lead in it. If the paint's inside, everything should be ok unless it's peeling (eg around the windows) -- in which case they should stay away from it. Not to make you worried, but just so you know --- Lead poisoning can cause damage to their brains and nervous systems, and it can cause behavior and learning problems (such as hyperactivity), slowed growth, hearing problems and headaches.

About Hugo Chavez' effort, from what I know, his main focus is on the Oil Heat Program for indigenous Nations and poor communities. Unfortunately, the effort hasn't reached South Dakota yet, and according to the official website for the program, http://www.citizensenergy.com, they aren't accepting any more applications this year. On top of going through the website, there's also a toll-free number you can call for more info, 1-877-JOE-4-OIL (1-877-563-4645)

Depending on what you need, I would say talk to the Friends of Pine ridge. I'm certain they can help. Their website is http://friendsofpineridgereservation.org.

And, for the long term, the group "Trees, Water, People" has a program to install solar-powered heaters on Pine Ridge. For more on this, see http://www.treeswaterpeople.org/tribal/tribal_solar.htm

I hope this helps, Rose.

Respectfully,
Ahni

My heart goes completely out to Mr. Chavez and his generosity. He is one of the fewest people in the world who I believe gives with a true heart. I am a Native American "Oglala Lakota" from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I am a single working mother, raising three beautiful children on my own. I have recently purchased a three bedroom home from our tribe, for the amount of $3,000.00 because these home are said to have lead in the paint and are run down. I took the chance any way because homes on our reservation are scarce. I was not aware of the cost of moving a home, so to make this comment or letter short. I am asking if you have any resources that would help my children and I. I was told by an instructor that Mr.Chavez helps minorities. Any assistance would be helpful!!
